I’ve been reading several books recently on lifespan/healthspan.
My concerns probably go back to watching my mother’s last few years — the physical and mental decline were sad to watch. As I age, is there anything I can do to minimize the decline.
Attia has (apparently) had a social media presence and this book is his summary of his current thinking. His advice is not surprising compared to other things I’ve read. Focus is on diet, activity, medical, etc.
One theme that he rides is the idea of “Medicine 3.0”. Medicine 1.0 is the original medical practice — things like “humors”, blood-letting, etc.
Medicine 2.0 is today’s standard medical practice. Focus is on disease and injury, with standardized approaches to curing the disease and fixing the injury.
Medicine 3.0 focuses more on a life-long approach to avoiding/mitigating conditions before they become a problem. A classic example is type 2 diabetes. There is a lot of evidence that today’s obesity epidemic can (possibly) be addressed with life-style interventions (diet, exercise, etc).
An interesting read.
